Classroom Assistant Teacher

The Knoxville Montessori School is looking for a motivated, experienced individual to serve as a Classroom Assistant Teacher in  a multi-age classroom. Hours: Monday-Friday from 7:30am - 4:15pm during the school calendar year, plus overnight trips and occasional school events on evenings or weekends

 

 RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • Supporting the classroom teachers in following the Montessori Curriculum to stay consistent with the KMS Guidelines and Accreditation.
  • Supervising students throughout their daily schedule to include observation
  • Fostering a positive learning environment by maintaining a calm and joyful atmosphere, encouraging growth towards independence for each child, and respecting children in helping themselves and in discovering their individual potential
  • Assisting in preparing and maintaining the classroom environment by keeping the space clean and stocked, cleaned, restoring the environment at the end of every school day, and more
  • Responding to emergencies and ensuring student safety, including practicing and modeling school procedures and policies.
  •  Attending trips (4 per year) or managing a classroom in the lead teachers’ absence
  • Participating in staff meetings and attending required school events
  • Completing annual training and professional development/certifications

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree
  • Experience working with children
  • Individual initiative, detail oriented, and ability to work as a team
  • Knowledge of child development and the Montessori educational philosophy a plus.

 *Once hired the candidate will be expected to take a Montessori Assistant training course.

COMPENSATION: Salaried, starting at $29,000 per year based on qualifications and experience. Benefits include paid holidays and retirement plan.



After Care and School Support

 

The After Care and School Support team provides backup to the teachers, assistants, and administration during the school day and implements the afterschool and summer programs.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

·      Support classroom staff with break coverage, dishes, preparation, and other responsibilities as needed. 

·      Supervise classroom recess, nap time, and other daily scheduled activities. 

·      Supervise students in recess, aftercare, and summer programming, fostering opportunities for outdoor play. 

·      Assist with preparing for special events by making copies, sorting materials for classrooms, staging spaces, childcare coverage, etc. 

·       At the end of each day, reset the environment by cleaning and restocking supplies.

·      Respond to emergencies and ensure student safety, including practicing and modeling school procedures and policies. 

·      Foster a positive environment by maintaining a calm and joyful atmosphere, encouraging growth towards independence for each child.

·      Support the school and its mission, vision, and values, including a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

·      As required, participate in staff meetings and attend school events.

·      Completion of annual training and professional development/certifications, including those   required by licensing (such as First Aid/CPR).

·      Perform other duties as needed.


QUALIFICATIONS

·      Must be 21 years or older to work the 6-hour (11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. or 6:00pm) shift.

·      Minimum of a High School diploma. An Associate degree preferred or actively enrolled in a Bachelor's program.

·      Experience working with children ages 2-18.

·      Individual initiative, detail-oriented, and ability to work as a team.

·      Knowledge of child development and the Montessori educational philosophy.

·      Compassionate communicator with effective verbal and written communication skills.

·      Skilled at building relationships with children, families, and colleagues.

COMPENSATION: Hourly rate, starting at $13 an hour.
